About Myanmar
The Golden Land of Burma, one of the last south-Asian
countries to open up to tourism has long been
sealed off to foreigners since its bamboo curtain
slammed down in the 1960s. Whether you just want
to stop in Rangoon for a few days rest and respite
from the hubbub and pollution of Asia's teeming
metropolis's such as Bangkok (our transfer point),
or have more time for a leisurely up-country tour
of Pagan and Mandalay, let Marco Polo take you
there in style with our "Road to Mandalay."
Yangon
Yangon, the capital city is the gateway to Myanmar.
.Evergreen and cool with lush tropical trees,
shady parks and beautiful lakes, Yangon has earned
the name of "the Garden City of the East". A relatively
simple city without skyscrapers, neon-lit clamor,
crowded squalor and the pace of modern fife, Yangon
is attractive in its own special way. Tour highlights
are the world famous Shwedagon Pagoda of pure
gold! Towering 100 meters above the green cityscape
the pagoda is the most revered Theravada Buddhist
shrine. Surrounding it are clusters of magnificent
temples, rest houses and monasteries. In the Maha
Bandoola Park, named after a Burmese general of
the First Anglo-Burmese War, is the Independence
Monument, a 46-m. obelisk surrounded by 5 pillars
- representing the harmony of Burma with its 5
former semi-autonomous states. At the nearby National
Museum we see Burmese antiquities and a rich treasure
of Buddhist relics. World Peace Pagoda was built
in 1952 for the Sixth World Buddhist Synod held
there in 1954.
Bago (Pegu)
An ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom (5th Century)
Bago is situated only 80 km from Yangon. Places
of interest in Bago are Shwomawdaw Pagoda, built
over 2000 years ago by two merchants Taphussa
and Bhallika; the famous Kalyani Sima (Ordination
Hall); Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha (55 meters
long, 4 m. high) and huge Buddha images of Kyaikpun
Pagoda and the colorful Bago market.
Mandalay
Mandalay, the last capital of the Myanmar Kingdom,
is in Central Myanmar, 688 km due north of Yangon.
Tour highlights are Mandalay's most important
religious structure the Mahamuni (Great Sage)
Pagoda built in 1784. The pagoda enshrines a sitting
bronze image of Lord Buddha 3.8 meters tall with
layers of gold leaves pasted onto the image by
devotees. This was booty taken by conquering Burmese
troops from Arakan (Kampuchea). There are two
more important pagodas - Eindawya Pagoda and Shwe
Kyi Myint Pagoda. The Eindawya Pagoda contains
a Buddha figure made of chalcedony, carried to
Burma in 1839 from Bodhgaya in India where Lord
Buddha attained enlightenment. The National Museum
and Library collection extends across many eras
of Burmese history.
Sagaing
Sagaing lies 21-km southwest of Mandalay on the
west bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Sagaing Hills
are known as a religious retreat where over 400
monasteries for monks and nuns are located for
Buddhistic studies and meditation. About 10 km
from Sagaing is the Kaunghmudaw, an enormous dome-shaped
pagoda, built by King Thalun in 1636 on the model
of the Mahaceti Pagoda of Sri Lanka. There is
also Ywataung village known for its silversmiths.
Amarapura
Situated about 11 km. south of Mandalay, Amarapura
is an ancient capital of the Konbaung Dynasty.
Patodawgyi Pagoda, U Bein Bridge (1208 m.) built
by the Mayor U Bein with teak planks two centuries
ago and silk-weaving industry are places of interest
to visit.
Bagan (Pagan)
Known as the city of four million pagodas, Bagan
is one of the richest archaeological sites in
Asia. This enchanting city is situated on the
eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River about 193
km south of Mandalay. In many respects it is the
most remarkable religious city in the world -
more spectacular in the multitude of its temples
and the lavishness of design than Jerusalem, Rome
or Benares! The ruins of Bagan city cover an area
of 42 sq. km. containing over 2000 edifices. The
majority of these well-preserved temples and pagodas
offer rich architectural heritage of the period
between the 11th and 13th centuries.
